Are you looking for some SEO advice that could increase your organic rankings? Perhaps you want to increase your on-page SEO to help you outrank your competitors?

On-Page SEO, also known as On-Site SEO, is when you optimise your web pages to rank higher in search engines. Common On-Page SEO practices include optimising title tags, content, internal links, URLs and much more.

In this blog, we have included our top 12 On-Page SEO tips that will help take your rankings to the next level.

On-Page SEO Tips

Meta title

Meta titles are a very important part of your website when it comes to SEO. The meta title is the text that is displayed on search engine results pages to indicate what the page is about. If you want to write effective meta titles, you need to provide a clear, concise and descriptive title, within a 50-60 character limit. To write effective metadata you need to focus on keywords, including a call-to-action and making sure that the content is unique to your website.

Meta Descriptions

A meta description is content within the HTML on your website. It is used to describe the content of a webpage. Meta descriptions can often be overlooked when it comes to SEO because they don’t have a direct impact on search rankings. However, they can increase click-through rates, which in turn will improve your rankings. The key to creating effective meta descriptions is to write unique content that includes plenty of keywords describing your on-page content.

High Quality Content

Something else you’ll need to think about when trying to increase your organic rankings is high-quality content. Unique and high-quality content is important when helping your website rank higher organically. The content written on your page is what makes it worthy of a position on Google, therefore it is key to make your content valuable and engaging. Creating high-quality content for your website gives the users the information they’re looking for and quicker, which means they aren’t going to be bouncing back off your website anytime soon.

H1 Page Titles

The H1 page title is at the top of a page and usually has the same value as the page title. H1’s are used to display the title of the page within the page content and let the reader know what your content is about, as well as structuring the page to allow Google to read it better. When writing your H1 title, it is key to make sure you include your main keywords and the subject matter.

Headings

When looking at your on-page SEO, headings are very important. Headings on your website show text structure and help to guide readers through your content. As well as making it easier to read, you’re also improving accessibility for those who can’t easily read from the screen. Headings don’t directly impact SEO, however, they will indirectly help due to the high-quality content on your page. If people can’t find what they need on your website, the bounce rate will be much higher, affecting your SEO rankings. So, including high quality, keyword filled content will help you rank higher.

Alt Tags

The alt tags on your website are to convey what the image is and how it relates to the content on your website. Google values alt tags highly, so making sure all of your images on your website have alt tags is important. For the best results from your alt tags, describe the image as specifically as possible.

Page URLs

Page URLs, more commonly known as web addresses, are used to locate a particular web page. URLs are only a minor ranking factor when search engines determine the ranking, but using a keyword in your URL can improve the site’s visibility. So, where there is not a direct change to ranking, it still does help when trying to increase your rankings.

Internal Linking

An internal link is any link from one page on your website to another page on your website. Including internal links on your website will help reduce your site’s bounce rate and allow the user to stay engaged for longer. Internal linking provides a slight boost in organic traffic, tieing pages back together, making each page much more valuable.

Site Speed

The site speed of your website shows how quickly your users are able to see and interact with the content on your site. To make your website much more accessible for your users, allowing them to have a better experience, you’ll need to make improvements to your site speed. Google looks closely at site speed when ranking pages higher, and you could potentially be penalised if your website doesn’t load very fast. To increase your page speed, we would recommend optimising your images, reducing redirects and enabling browser caching.

Mobile Responsiveness

Mobile responsiveness is whether a website is optimised to be functional on devices of different sizes. Mobile-friendly websites will see a significant boost in search rankings, so it will be beneficial to get this up to scratch. Tools such as Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test and HubSpot’s Website Grader are great to use to determine mobile friendliness.

Structured Markup

Structured markup is a type of code that makes it easier for search engines to crawl, organise and display your content. Schema Markup and Google’s structured data markup helper will make your life so much easier.

Keyword Research

Keyword Research is the process where you find popular search terms that people are putting into search engines. Including these keywords in your content can increase your rankings on Google when people are searching for similar content. Doing keyword research is a great opportunity to find out what your audience is searching for and what your keywords need to be.
